Fake News

How to Spot Fake News

Four Moves and a Habit:

The Four Moves:

1. Check for Previous Work:  Has this story already been fact checked?

2. Go Upstream to the Source: Does the original story or picture match what is being shared virally?

3. Read Laterally: What do other, trustworthy sources have to say about what is being shared?

4. Circle Back: If the background of the story is complex, stop and use what you've learned to begin a new and better informed search.

The Habit:

Check you Emotions:  Fake News causes strong emotional reactions.  If a story or image is causing you an instant, visceral reaction, stop and verify that it is true before you share it.
