Black Lives Matter

This resource guide is a living document in support of Black Lives Matter. New resources will be continually added over time.

The Cal Poly Pomona University Library is committed to providing accessible and informative materials that address racial and social justice. In this guide, you'll find a growing list of anti-racism, social justice, and Black Lives Matter related resources available on and off campus. This collection is by no means comprehensive but, we hope, it will provide our community with some guidance for addressing racism, white supremacy, and state violence while also centering and uplifting the immense cultural contributions of Black Americans.

  • All books listed are linked to their record in OneSearch. If you see a gap or would like to request an eBook version of any print materials listed, please contact one of your CPP Librarians. We'll do our best to accommodate all reasonable requests!

  • If you'd rather purchase your own copy of any resource, consider supporting a Black-owned independent bookstore near you.

  • If you'd like to have some structure to help you engage with these varied resources, check out the Black Lives Matter Syallbus from Dr. Frank Leon Roberts of NYU.

Community Reflection

On June 2nd, 2020, the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Diversity at Cal Poly Pomona held a community reflection in response to numerous incidents of anti-blackness in the United States – which sparked outrage, grief, despair, and nationwide protests. Following the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at the hands of police, the fatal shooting of jogger Ahmaud Arbery, and the racial profiling of Christian Cooper, there was an urgent need for the Bronco family to come together and share in that collective grief.

Throughout this guide, we've shared many of the resources initially shared by the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Diveristy in order to better support diversity, equity, and inclusion work on campus.

Work in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and anti-racism more broadly continue at CPP. On June 17, 2020, the Cal Poly Pomona Academic Senate adopted the Cal Poly Pomona's Commitment to Anti-Racism resolution.

Editorial Note

Though a great deal of this guide's content was gathered or written by the two library workers credited to the left – some of the references, subject areas, or specific resources were pulled from similar library-based resources, with permission. We are very thankful for the librarians at Dominican University for their thoughtful, comprehensive Black Lives Matter and Anti-Racism LibGuides, as well as Pierce College's Anti-Racism: A Learning Guide.
