Citation Guides

Please check with your professor on the preferred citation style for your class. Rules of each citation style are detailed in publications called style manuals that you can access at our library (see links below). There are also a number of online guides that provide tips and examples that may prove useful to you, including Purdue's Online Writing Lab (OWL) for ChicagoMLA, and APA format.

Chicago is the citation style most commonly requested in design disciplines for the formatting of cited references in student papers and worksThis style guide includes manuscript preparation guidelines, information on style and usage, and detailed explanation of the two Chicago documentation styles: Notes and Bibliography and Author-Date reference. This Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide provides clear examples of how to use Chicago-style citation.

Other commonly used citation styles include the American Psychological Association (APA) style and the Modern Language Association (MLA) style, but there are many others styles in addition to these.

Always check with your professors to determine which citation style they prefer you use!
