Sylvia Rivera (born July 2, 1951, Bronx, New York, U.S.—died February 19, 2002, New York, New York) American civil rights activist who advocated for gay rights and was particularly influential in the movement’s early years. A transgender woman, she fought for the inclusion of transgender and other gender-nonconforming people in the mainstream lesbian and gay communities.
