Archived Steps For Searching Lexis-Nexis

NOTE: If you are looking for a U.S. Supreme Court case, lower federal or state court case, go directly now to the Westlaw database.

____________________________________________________________________________

ATTENTION: As of July 1, 2016, the library no longer has the Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe database. It has been replaced by the  Westlaw database. At the request of Dr. John Wyatt, the steps to search for contract appeals boards decisions are being retained for those of you who may have access to Lexis-Nexis through your current or future employer or some other subscription arrangement. If you use the archived steps below, keep in mind they may be out-of-date and/or the Lexis-Nexis version you are accessing may differ from the version to which the library subscribed in the past.

Open the Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe database. Do not use the "Look up a Legal Case." Also, ignore the search box for the time being. Instead, follow the illustrated instructions below, beginning with Step 1.

STEP 1 -- Click "Find" in the "Source Directory" in the upper right portion of the screen.

Source Directory is circled in the upper right side. The search bar and the look up by case button have an x over them.

STEP 2 -- Remove check mark from "All Publication Types" box. Check the boxes for "Administrative Materials & Regulations" and "Boards, Panels & Tribunals." Then click the red "Find Sources" button, located all the way to the right hand side of the screen.

there is a circle around the publication type menu and around the find sources button

STEP 3 --Scroll alphabetically to "Board of Contract Appeals Decisions" and "Board of Contract Apps - Armed Services, Corps of Eng, VA, NASA." Check off both boxes. Click the red "OK - Continue" button on the far right side of the screen.

NOTE! If you need to search for decisions from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Board of Contract Appeals, you will need to locate it separately in the alphabetic list of sources discussed in STEP 3 above. The GAO Board is alphabetized as follows:

U.S. Government Accountability Office Contract Appeals Board  [and note that in the alphabetic list Lexis has alphabetized the abbreviation for  "United States" in two different ways:

U.S.  [alphabetically this will be found at the very beginning of letter "U"]

US    [alphabetically this will be found between UR and UT]
