Book Talk: "Keeping Races in Their Places" (12pm - 1pm)

"A book perfect for this moment" –Katherine M. O’Regan, Former Assistant Secretary, US Department of Housing and Urban Development

More than fifty years after the passage of the Fair Housing Act, American cities remain divided along the very same lines that this landmark legislation explicitly outlawed. Keeping Races in Their Places tells the story of these lines—who drew them, why they drew them, where they drew them, and how they continue to circumscribe residents’ opportunities to this very day.

Weaving together sophisticated statistical analyses of more than a century’s worth of data with an engaging, accessible narrative that brings the numbers to life, Keeping Races in Their Places exposes the entrenched effects of redlining on American communities. This one-of-a-kind contribution to the real estate and urban economics literature applies the author’s original geographic information systems analyses to historical maps to reveal redlining’s causal role in shaping today’s cities.

Spanning the era from the Great Migration to the Great Recession, Keeping Races in Their Places uncovers the roots of the Black-white wealth gap, the subprime lending crisis, and today’s lack of affordable housing in maps created by banks nearly a century ago. Most of all, it offers hope that with the latest scholarly tools we can pinpoint how things went wrong—and what we must do to make them right.

Avoiding Plagiarism Workshop (12pm - 1pm)

The Office of Student Conduct & Integrity has seen a rise of cases involving plagiarism and students cheating on platforms like Chegg and Discord. Are you aware of what the consequences could be if you are caught cheating on an assignment? Did you know that some consequences could result in an automatic zero or failure in the class?

The Office of Student Conduct & Integrity and the University Library have teamed up to offer the “Avoiding Plagiarism & Maintaining Academic Integrity Workshop” to students. In this workshop, we will review Cal Poly Pomona’s definition of academic integrity, review some strategies and tips on paraphrasing and citations and discuss how the misuse of online platforms can lead to an academic integrity violation.

The workshop will be offered this Spring 2022 Semester as follows: Thursday – February 3rd, Thursday – March 10th, Tuesday – April 12th, and Thursday – May 5th. The sessions will be offered in a hybrid format this semester and held during U-Hour (12pm). Students will have an opportunity to attend in-person on a first-come, first-serve basis. Otherwise, students will have an opportunity to attend the session online via Zoom. We will email registrants with more details after sign-up.

For any specific questions regarding the workshop, you may email Nicole Mendoza at mendoza@cpp.edu.
