Davenport (1867-1912) was a noted political cartoonist from the United States. While employed at the newspaper the The Chicago Daily Herald he studied and drew Arabian horses from Syria exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. These horses were auctioned off after the exhibition and remained in the United States.

Davenport sought out the imports and discovered that most of them were owned by the fertilizer magnate Peter Bradley of Hingham, Massachusetts. He purchased several of the horses from Bradley between 1898 and 1905.

In 1906, Davenport traveled to the Middle East to obtain more Arabian horses. Bradley helped fund the expedition and C.A. "Arthur" Moore, Jr. and John H. "Jack" Thompson, Jr. accompanied him on his journey through Syria and Lebanon. Davenport acquired 27 horses during the trip and brought them back to the United States.
